Baja

Stef had jelly arms from all the paddling, and was being tossed around by the surf. When she lost sight of shore she waved for help. Luckily, Thomas saw her and ended up pulling her in with her board. It was all very exciting.

During both visits we headed to Porto Nuevo for dinner. It's a small fishing village about five kilometers south and boasts some of the best lobster on the Pacific Coast. You can get a tail and a half, served with rice, beans, tortillas, and soup for about $20. I know-and it's good! We went to a place that served a huge tray of the lobster tails family-style and the best part might have been the bowls of garlic butter they served with it. The town is also home to all kinds of schlock shops that offer crazy-cheap jewelry, purses, Mexican wrestling masks, and glassware "practically free." Before stuffing ourselves silly for dinner, Andrea got cute leather flip-flops, Juli got a Mexican shopping bag, I got silver earrings, and we had to drag Stef and Thomas out of the candy store.

Further down the coast is La Fonda Hotel and Restaurant, which seems to be a charming place to stay, with a modern spa and a great restaurant with killer shrimp tacos and more guacamole than a table of four could handle (no exaggeration: see the photo). There is a sandy beach in front of the hotel and great surf; La Fonda is a beach break so that you can spread out and find your own area. The surf was small but stubborn the day we went, so we didn't catch many waves but it was still an idyllic day. We chilled on our beach blanket and bought coral and turquoise ankle bracelets from the vendors, then had lunch at the restaurant before heading back home to L.A. Yes, we really do eat as much as we surf on these trips. And as full as we were after lunch, we still had room for churros from the guy selling them on the side of the road while we were waiting to cross the border. Viva Mexico!
